Local youngsters from Ledbury and District ASC travelled to the prestigious Stourbridge Crystal Open Meet held at Wolverhampton Swimming Bathsthis week. Acceptance to the meet was granted to less than half the applicants which resulted in only a small squad but they were determined to make the use of the opportunity to gain entry times for the all-important County Championships starting in March.

Twelve year old Eve Watson showed great focus for each of her 6 races and established herself as a potential champion swimming a new best time in every race and all within the County Qualifying Standard. Also verifying his recent improvement ten year old Ben Collins was delighted to gain a personal best time in all four of his events. William Hughes, another swimmer showing steady improvement due to consistency in his training programme also completed all of his races in improved personal best times.

The day got off to a great start with both Robert Wilson and William Hughes swimming a strong 200m Individual Medley and bagging new personal best times. Shortly after this race both boys swam a 50m backstroke along with team mates William Kennedy, Malachi Cashmore, Oscar Curtis and Ben Collins.  All six demonstrated good technique on both the start and turn and were duly rewarded with new best times for their log books. Kennedy went on to improve his time in the longer 200m race. Also on backstroke Lily Painter achieved a new best time on the four length, 100m race. Painter swam well in her best event, 200m breaststroke, to finish just out of the medals in 4th place. Lydia Freeman had a mixed day but was happy to equal her recent best time in the 100m freestyle within the County Qualifying time.

Ledbury and District head Coach Duncan Loraine remarked ‘I am pleased with the swimmers – being so close to the Christmas break they have only been back in full training for a couple of weeks and to swim to a PB is a real achievement. For those who missed their times it serves as a useful benchmark for improvement both in speed and technique which of course we will address during training.
